Intake
There is only 1 intake per year - August. All our undergraduate programmes are conducted on a full-time basis.
Will all applicants get a chance to be interviewed for admission?
Only shortlisted applicants are required to come for an interview with the Admissions Committee.
Will my chance of gaining admission into my second, third, fourth and fifth choice be lower if I am not selected for my first choice?
The Admissions Committee considers an applicant's choices in the order of his/her preference. If you are not successful in your first choice, you will still be considered for your other choices on par with other eligible applicants.
Are students from the A-Level Science / Arts stream and Polytechnic non-business diplomas eligible for admission to all the five programmes offered by SMU?
It does not matter which stream you are from, as long as you satisfy the basic requirements to be eligible to apply.
I am a polytechnic graduate. Do I have to be a Merit holder to apply?
Admissions to SMU is competitive and selective. As long as you satisfy the minimum entry requirements, we welcome all to apply. SMU seeks students with strong academic potential, high self-motivation and broad interests. We aim to enroll individuals who will contribute to a rich university learning environment and benefit most from a stimulating and vibrant campus experience.
I have not taken Additional Mathematics. Does that mean I will not qualify?
As most of the subjects in our programmes are quantitative in nature, a good background in mathematics is essential to enable you to cope with these subjects. If you have not taken Additional Mathematics, SMU will look into your mathematics background, your overall school results and the SAT I scores on a case-by-case basis.
What are the distinctive and unique features of the programmes at SMU?
There are several key features that distinguish the programmes of SMU from those of other universities:
Curriculum
All our programmes are modeled after the American approach to education. It is a broad-based curriculum, highly challenging, designed to broaden and enrich intellectual outlook and foster personal and professional development. Besides studying the largely innovative core curriculum, SMU students read a selection of subjects from General Education, Career Skills, Technology, and Global and Regional Studies.
Seminar Approach
Instead of the traditional lecture and tutorial format, SMU adopts a seminar teaching approach, where classes are deliberately kept small, averaging 40-50 each, to maximize interaction and stimulate critical thinking. This approach follows the American pedagogy and is instrumental in sharpening communication and presentation skills, as well as developing leadership and teambuilding qualities.
Faculty
SMU's recruitment of faculty is highly selective and rigorous. Using an international network of resources, SMU invests heavily in the selection of quality faculty from around the world. The result is a core of SMU faculty with impressive teaching and research credentials, hailing from varied backgrounds in both the academic and the private sectors. 85% of our faculty have PhDs from Ivy League and top international universities, and have published widely in leading academic or research journals.
Practical Internship
All SMU students are required to complete 12 weeks of internship - ten weeks in a business organisation and two weeks in a voluntary welfare organization. SMU believes that internships serve as a valuable bridge between learning and work experience. The internship with a voluntary welfare organization is integral to SMU's holistic approach to individual development. We believe that a complete education should include shaping individuals as responsible and civic-minded members of society

SMU strongly encourages its students to broaden their outlook and experience abroad by participating in its international exchange programmes, study trips, study missions and overseas attachments. We aim to send as many students as possible to go on exchange. SMU currently has agreements with 112 partner universities (as at 17 April 2006). Students may study overseas for one or two terms to gain invaluable exposure to different cultures, education systems and work practices. So far, 100% of our students who applied for an exchange programme are successful.
Q: Is the SMU degree widely recognized?
A: As one of the three government-funded universities in Singapore, SMU is the only one that has a collaborative agreement with the Wharton School University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University which have been consistently ranked the top schools in the US in business and IT respectively.
The Government, statutory boards and the private sector offer scholarships that are tenable at SMU. Several companies have even sponsored scholarships exclusively for study at SMU. All these underscore the level of recognition accorded to SMU.
In the case of our BAcc programme, it has received accreditation by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS), Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), CPA Australia, and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA). CPA Australia and ICAA have mutual recognition arrangements with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and other accounting institutes around the world, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW). Such recognition gives SMU BAcc graduates international mobility.
According to our Graduate Employment Survey 2006:
- 100% of SMU graduates found jobs within 6 months of graduation;
- 70% receiving 2 offers or more;
- 60% were offered jobs before they even graduated.
